Larry L. Mathis, CFP®

During my 18-year career in the financial services industry, I have assisted scores of Dental Professionals including General Dentists, Orthodontists, Endodontists, Periodontists, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Pediatric Dentists, and yes, even Prosthodontists. I have an extensive background in financial planning, including investment management, estate planning, employee benefits and insurance planning, as well as cash management and debt elimination. My primary goal is to help clients simplify and improve their lives by inspiring them to implement financial strategies based on what they value most in life. Below is a brief summary of my career.

I was born to Gerald D. Mathis and Jeannine S. Mathis. In 1965 my father died, leaving my 35-year mother with me, my five sisters and my older brother to raise on her own.  Much of what I know about personal finance I learned from my mother (but that’s another book.)

I graduated form Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Business.  Upon graduation from ASU in 1984 I went to work for the Ciba-Geigy Corporation (a large multi-national conglomerate based in Basil Switzerland). In 1985 I was married to my wife Rhonda and within days of our wedding, Ciba-Geigy moved us to San Diego, CA in February 1985.

In 1989, Rhonda and I decided to move back to Phoenix to be closer to family. Shortly thereafter I left Ciba-Geigy to become a disability insurance specialist for the Paul Revere Life Insurance Company. It was during my years with Paul Revere that I focused my “marketing” efforts within the dental profession. After “selling” disability insurance to dentists for about two years I discovered something. There is only so much disability insurance that a dentist can buy. In addition, my limited experience and education also limited the services I could provide to my clients. It was about that time when I decided that I wanted to become a “real” financial planner.

Now understand, I am a big believer in life insurance. The fact is it was life insurance that kept our family living on the right side of the tracks when my father died. And it was life insurance that paid for my college education. However, life insurance is not the answer to all financial planning needs.

During my years with various insurance companies I went through the processes of getting my series 6, 63, 7 and 65 licenses that allowed me to sell stocks, bonds, mutual funds and securities based insurance products.  It was also during these years that I met a Dennis Rogers. Dennis was a CPA who had the same goal to provide comprehensive financial planning.

Dennis and I later formed Rogers, Mathis & Associates an independent financial planning firm in Phoenix, AZ.  Eventually we brought on Frank Kirby as a third partner and Rogers, Mathis & Kirby was formed.

Today I operate Mathis Financial, my personal financial planning practice as a sole practitioner specializing in helping dental professionals “Bridge the Financial Gap.”

I am dedicated to providing comprehensive financial planning services to dental professionals.  As a Certified Financial Planner™ I focus my efforts helping dental professionals improve their lives as well as the lives of their families both personally and financially. It is my goal that the information shared in this book will do the same for you.
